About Kargil Town
A vibrant mountain town on the banks of the Suru river — the second-largest in Ladakh and the traditional halt on the Srinagar–Leh route, with a strong Balti culture.
History & significance
Kargil's strategic position made it a key trading hub on the old Treaty Road linking Skardu, Yarkand, Srinagar and Leh. It gained worldwide recognition during the 1999 Kargil War. Today it is a peaceful, mostly Shia Muslim town with mosques, bazaars and apricot orchards.
Travel tips
- Stay overnight to break the long Srinagar–Leh drive.
- Try local Balti cuisine — momos, khambir bread, and apricot jam.
- Visit the Munshi Aziz Bhat Museum for trade-route history.
- Dress modestly — Kargil is a conservative town.
