About Mulbekh Monastery

Home to a striking 9-metre rock-cut statue of Maitreya Buddha believed to date from the 7th–8th century, this ancient gompa marks the western edge of Buddhist Ladakh.

History & significance

The Chamba statue at Mulbekh is one of the oldest Buddhist relics in Ladakh, likely carved when Buddhism spread along the trade routes from Kashmir. Two small monasteries — one Drukpa and one Gelugpa — sit on the cliff above.

  • Stop here on the long drive between Kargil and Leh to break the journey.
