About Phuktal Monastery
A spectacular cave monastery built into a massive cliff face in remote Zanskar, accessible only on foot — one of the most photographed monasteries in the Himalayas.
History & significance
Phuktal (or Phugtal) was founded in the early 12th century by Gangsem Sherap Sampo and belongs to the Gelugpa school. The honeycomb of whitewashed buildings clings to the cliff around a sacred cave where great Buddhist scholars are said to have meditated.
