About Alchi Monastery

An 11th-century monastic complex famous for its exquisite Kashmiri-influenced murals and wood carvings — some of the oldest surviving Buddhist art in the world.

History & significance

Founded by the Tibetan translator Rinchen Zangpo in the early 11th century, Alchi is unique among Ladakhi monasteries for sitting on flat land rather than a cliff. Its Dukhang and Sumtsek temples preserve a thousand-year-old artistic tradition under Archaeological Survey of India protection.

Travel tips

  • Photography is strictly prohibited inside the temples.
  • Hire a local caretaker-guide for the iconography.
