About Leh Palace
A nine-storey royal palace built in the 17th century by King Sengge Namgyal, towering above the old town of Leh with sweeping views over the Indus Valley and the Stok Kangri range.
History & significance
Modelled after the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Leh Palace was completed around 1600 and served as the royal residence of the Namgyal dynasty until they were exiled to Stok in the mid-19th century. The Archaeological Survey of India now maintains it, preserving murals, religious paintings, and crowns once worn by the Ladakhi royals.
