The dramatic confluence where the muddy Zanskar river meets the emerald Indus, forming a striking two-tone swirl framed by towering ochre mountains.

History & significance

For centuries this junction has been a sacred landmark for the Buddhist communities of Ladakh and a navigation point for traders moving between the Indus and Zanskar valleys. Today it is also the launch point for white-water rafting expeditions on the Zanskar.

Travel tips

  • Stop at the BRO viewpoint above Nimmu for the classic photo.
  • Combine with Magnetic Hill, Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, and Alchi.
  • Rafting season runs late June through August — book the day before.
  • No facilities at the viewpoint; carry water and snacks.
