About Shanti Stupa
A gleaming white-domed Buddhist stupa perched on a hilltop at Chanspa, famous for panoramic sunrise and sunset views over Leh and the surrounding Himalayan peaks.
History & significance
Built in 1991 by Japanese Buddhist monk Bhikshu Gyomyo Nakamura together with Ladakhi monks to promote world peace, the stupa enshrines relics of the Buddha consecrated by the 14th Dalai Lama.
Travel tips
- Drive up the back road if not yet acclimatised — the front staircase has 500+ steps.
- Carry a light jacket; it gets windy and cool after sunset.
- Respect monks if a prayer ceremony is in progress.
- Photography is allowed outside but ask before shooting inside the shrine.
