About Thiksey Monastery

A twelve-storey monastic complex resembling a mini-Potala Palace, home to over 100 monks and a stunning 15-metre Maitreya Buddha statue spanning two floors.

History & significance

Founded in the 15th century by Sherab Zangpo as part of the Gelugpa (Yellow Hat) order, Thiksey is the largest gompa in central Ladakh. The Maitreya statue was installed in 1970 to commemorate the Dalai Lama's visit and is considered one of the finest in the region.

  • Arrive by 6 AM to witness the morning puja with horns and chants.
  • Modest clothing required inside the prayer halls.
  • Climb to the rooftop for sweeping Indus valley views.
