About Basgo Palace

The crumbling fortress capital of the Namgyal kings before Leh, set on a striking ridge with three restored temples housing rare Maitreya statues.

History & significance

Basgo served as the capital of Lower Ladakh from the 15th to 17th centuries and famously withstood a three-year siege by Mongol-Tibetan forces in the 1680s. Its citadel and temples are on the World Monuments Watch list, with the Chamba Lhakhang containing a magnificent gilded Maitreya.

Travel tips

  • The climb to the citadel is steep but short — wear sturdy shoes.
  • Restoration work is ongoing; respect barriers.
  • Easily combined with Magnetic Hill, Sangam, and Alchi.
  • Bring water — no shops near the site.
