About Parkachik Glacier
A massive glacier tongue from the Nun-Kun massif that tumbles down almost to the road, offering one of Ladakh's most accessible close-up glacier views.
History & significance
Parkachik Glacier feeds the Suru river and has been a vital water source for the valley's villages for centuries. Like most Himalayan glaciers, it is steadily retreating, making access easier but the ecosystem more fragile.
Travel tips
- Don't walk on the glacier — crevasses are hidden.
- Stop at the BRO viewpoint for the safest panorama.
- Combine with Rangdum and Pensi La on the way to Zanskar.
- Carry warm layers — winds off the ice are bitter.
