About Stok Palace

The official residence of the Namgyal royal family of Ladakh since 1843, now part heritage hotel, part museum showcasing royal artefacts, thangkas, and crowns.

History & significance

Built in 1820 by King Tsepal Namgyal, Stok Palace became the seat of the dynasty after the Dogra invasion ended their reign in Leh. Queen Diskit Wangmo opened the palace museum and a wing as a luxury heritage stay.

  • The museum has a small but excellent collection — allow 45 minutes.
  • Stok Kangri base camp treks start nearby for the more adventurous.
  • Try the heritage hotel's traditional Ladakhi tea.
