About Hunder

Hunder is the high-altitude cold desert of Nubra Valley — rolling white sand dunes, sea-buckthorn groves and the famous double-humped Bactrian camels set against the Karakoram range.

History & significance

Hunder was once a halt on the ancient Silk Route between Ladakh, Yarkand and Kashgar. The Bactrian camels seen today descend from the caravan animals left behind when the trade routes closed in the mid-20th century.

Travel tips

  • Inner Line Permit required for Nubra; carry several copies.
  • Take a short Bactrian camel ride on the dunes in the evening.
  • Stay overnight in a Hunder camp or guesthouse to see the starry sky.
  • Carry sunscreen and sunglasses — the sand reflects strong sunlight.
