About Khardung La
One of the highest motorable passes in the world at 5,359 m, the gateway from Leh to Nubra and Shyok valleys and a bucket-list ride for road-trippers and bikers.
History & significance
Once part of the historic caravan route from Leh to Kashgar, Khardung La became militarily important during the Sino-Indian conflicts. The Border Roads Organisation built and maintains the road.
Travel tips
- Don't linger at the top for more than 20–30 minutes due to thin oxygen.
- Carry a Diamox course if prone to altitude sickness (consult your doctor).
- Fuel up in Leh — facilities at the pass are basic.
- Inner Line Permit needed to cross beyond into Nubra.
