About Lamayuru Monastery

One of the oldest and most dramatic monasteries in Ladakh, perched above the 'Moonland' — a surreal landscape of eroded yellow rock formations resembling the lunar surface.

History & significance

Lamayuru's origins trace back to the 10th century when scholar Mahasiddhacharya Naropa is said to have meditated here. The current Drikung Kagyu monastery dates to the 11th century and once housed over 400 monks.
