About Tso Moriri
A pristine high-altitude lake at 4,522 m surrounded by the Changthang plateau — a Ramsar wetland and breeding ground for the rare black-necked crane and bar-headed geese.
History & significance
Tso Moriri lies within the Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary and is sacred to the nomadic Changpa herders who graze their pashmina goats nearby. It was declared a Ramsar site in 2002 for its ecological significance.
Travel tips
- Inner Line Permit mandatory.
- Stay at Korzok village; very limited accommodation, book ahead.
- Do not enter the water — it is a protected ecosystem.
- Carry a high-clearance vehicle; the last stretch is rough.
