About Turtuk Village

One of the last Indian villages before the Line of Control, Turtuk is a green Balti settlement of apricot orchards, buckwheat fields, stone-and-wood houses and glacier streams set below the Karakoram peaks.

History & significance

Turtuk was part of Baltistan until 1971, when it came under Indian administration after the Indo-Pak war. Its people still speak Balti and preserve Balti food, dress and architecture, and the village opened to tourists only in 2010. The Balti Heritage House, royal Yagbo family home, natural glacier cold storage and old polo ground reflect this shared Ladakhi–Balti past.

Travel tips

  • Inner Line Permit required; carry several copies for the checkposts.
  • Stay overnight in a Balti homestay — the village is best experienced slowly.
  • Walk to the Balti Heritage House, natural cold storage and Turtuk waterfall.
  • Dress modestly and ask before photographing people; it is a conservative village.
  • Photography is restricted near army posts and the border viewpoint.
